Description

How Does GlideWear Work?

GlideWear fabric is a patented, dual-layer, low-friction fabric technology that protects skin by reducing the friction and shear that cause rubbing, bed sores, pressure ulcers, wounds, redness, and pain. It’s also great for athletic applications, including cycling shorts, helmets, and athletic apparel. GlideWear is durable, machine washable, and reusable.

What is GlideWear Pre-Ply Fabric?

GlideWear Pre-Ply is a version of GlideWear used specifically for prototyping, manufacturing, cutting, and sewing/welding. GlideWear Pre-Ply fabric comes in 3 different sizes: 30″x 30″ (approx. .75x.75 meters), 30″x 60″ (approx. .75×1.5 meters), and 60″x60″ (approx. 1.5×1.5 meters) panels in which the two GlideWear layers are temporarily bonded with a water-soluble adhesive. The manufacturer cuts components from the fabric panels, then sews or welds them. The temporary adhesive must be washed out by manufacturer either after cut and sew/weld or after integration into final product. Once adhesive is rinsed out, the low-friction GlideWear effect will be activated.

Manufactures and DMEs can now buy GlideWear Pre-Ply fabric in bulk and add it to their own products to make them even more effective. (Note: Permobil has an exclusive license in North America, South America, Australia, and New Zealand for the use of the registered trademark GlideWear within wheelchair seating, including cushions, backrests, and covers for wheelchair-related positioning systems. The use of GlideWear by others for such goods is strictly prohibited.)

GlideWear is ideal for the medical, athletic, transportation, and fine apparel industries. Consumers can also buy GlideWear Pre-Ply for home use.

“I immediately felt a difference in how my skin felt after getting into my wheelchair in the morning… I have noticed a significant reduction in red marks on my skin and heat rash bumps were all but gone. I have since ordered six additional pairs.” — Jason in Minnesota

GlideWear Pre-Ply for Manufacturers and Fabricators

When sewn in strategic, at-risk locations of medical devices, garments, and sports apparel, GlideWear significantly reduces unwanted, harmful friction and shear forces. You’ll love GlideWear, and so will your customers. The manufacturer of GlideWear, Tamarack Habilitation Technologies, uses GlideWear in a number of products, including GlideWear Skin Protection Underwear, Heel & Ankle Protectors, Forefoot Protection Socks, Wheelchair Cushion Covers, and Hair and Scalp Protection Pillowcases.

Tips for Sewing & Prototyping with GlideWear

GlideWear® Pre-Ply can be handled, cut, and sewn in any traditional method. All cutting and sewing should be done before washing out the adhesive. Once integrated into a finished product, it must be laundered to remove the water-soluble bonding agent that holds the dual-ply material together during manufacturing. Therefore, the “GlideWear® Low Friction Effect” is undetectable until after laundering. We recommend incorporating the GlideWear fabric strategically – only in the area where you need skin protection or low friction. Avoid covering an entire surface with GlideWear.

The best stitching technique for a specific product varies based on factors such as product, design, and combinations of materials. If you are making a product for someone with reduced sensation (“neuropathy”) or very sensitive skin, be sure to use flat seams, and keep seams away from parts of the body at a higher risk for skin breakdown.

  • Step 1: Make a patch out of GlideWear Pre-Ply bonded fabric. Cut the (unwashed) GlideWear Pre-Ply material to your desired size & shape.
  • Step 2: Pin the patch. The GlideWear fabric is quite stretchy. If you wish to sew a GlideWear patch to another material, particularly a fabric with less stretch, you must pin it well before sewing. Once you position the GlideWear patch as you want it, pin the perimeter every 1” to 2”.
  • Step 3: Sew on your GlideWear patch. Once your patch is pinned in place, it’s time to sew. A good stitch to use is a Tricot, also known as a multi-step zig-zag, with a stitch length of two millimeters (this is only a recommendation & your settings may need to be adjusted). A regular zig-zag stitch does not work well, as it causes the material to pucker after washing. With the middle of the presser foot about 1/8″ from the edge of the GlideWear sew the perimeter, overlapping the seam 1/2″ to finish it. The outermost edge of the stitch should be at, or just past, the edge of the GlideWear material.
  • Step 4: Activate the GlideWear Low-Friction Effect. Once you have sewn your product you can activate the GlideWear by washing! This can be done by hand or machine, no soap or detergent required. However, you must make sure all the water-soluble adhesive is washed out. It can then be air or machine dried (tumble dry low).

Step 1: Cut your GlideWear patch

Step 2: Pin your GlideWear patch in place

Step 3: Set up your sewing machine with a Tricot stitch

Step 4: Sew your GlideWear patch in place
